To celebrate British Food Fortnight, here are some of our very favourite pie recipes.

Melton Mowbray-style pork pie

We’re cheating a bit with this one (pictured above). It's actually from The Great British Book of Baking, a collection of recipes by all sorts of chefs. Classic ingredients include unsmoked back bacon, boned shoulder of pork, fresh sage, anchovy essence and jellied stock.

TV chef Lotte Duncan unusually combines lamb with orange, cranberries, honey and mint. Lotte says: “The idea of fruit and meat is very English, very old and very delicious." The proof is in the eating.

Beef and beer. What more could one hope for from a pie? The Hairy Bikers always use steak that's well marbled with fat for a fuller flavour. If you're not a fan of puff pastry, just use shortcrust instead.

Beef and Guinness pieAlternatively, you can use Guinness for a really full-flavoured pie, which is slow-cooked with prunes and dark muscovado sugar to really bring out the flavour of the succulent beef.
