The KitKat Chunky taste test: updated

Updated on 21 March 2013 | 0 Comments

Mint, chocolate fudge, hazelnut or coconut? Only one will survive. But what's our favourite KitKat Chunky flavour? We tested the office to find out.

You must have seen KitKat's ‘Choose a Chunky Champion’ advert by now… probably on the side of a bus. But in case you’ve been hibernating, here’s the deal: Nestle has released four new KitKat Chunky flavours, and it is up to the public to decide which one survives (you vote for your favourite bar here). It’s kind of like a chocolate Hunger Games.

I know my favourite (mint all the way!), but to get a better idea of which flavour might win, we asked a much wider audience – the gannets at both lovefood and lovemoney – to take part in a KitKat Chunky taste test. Fifteen people volunteered and, as well as marking each bar out of 10, they were asked to try and guess the flavour. Here are the results…

Fourth place – Coconut

chocA total 85 points out of a possible 150 – that’s just 57%. The majority despised it – ‘nasty’, ‘tastes like a bad Bounty bar’, ‘weird’, ‘I had to spit it out’ – although a couple did compliment its ‘subtle tones’ and ‘tropical taste’. This was the only sample plate that wasn’t licked clean by the end of the test. To its credit though, nobody failed to guess the flavour.

Details: 246 calories per bar; 25.7% fat.

Third place – Mint

mintFix! This was quite clearly the best, in my humble opinion. But it only scored 60% in our test, and was marked down because ‘mint should be reserved for lamb dinners’, ‘it tasted like a KitKat filled with toothpaste’, and ‘I was never a fan of mint chocolate’. It did score a couple of 10/10s though, and someone said that it was ‘the perfect KitKat – why has it taken them so long to release it?’ Everybody guessed the flavour correctly.

Details: 246 calories per bar; 25.5% fat.

Second place – Chocolate Fudge

chocChocolate fudge scores only slightly higher than mint – 62%. Nobody was in love with it, but it achieved sixes and sevens across the board, pretty much. ‘The flavour wasn’t anything special’, ‘a great chocolate hit’, ‘very sweet and creamy’ and ‘tastes like a Caramac bar’ were among the comments. Hardly anybody guessed that it was fudge flavoured – most thought it was either toffee or caramel.

Details: 256 calories; 30.8% fat.

And the winner is… Hazelnut

chocAn impressive 69% puts hazelnut on top. ‘Smooth and tasty’, ‘would be excellent with a cup of tea’, ‘not too overbearing’, ‘a lovely nutty, milky flavour’ and ‘like a Ferrero Rocher’ were just some of the positive comments. Although a few unhappier beavers foud it ‘claggy’, ‘sickly’, or ‘artificial in taste’. Everybody guessed that it was hazelnut flavour.

Details: 260 calories per bar; 31.4% fat. What a coincidence… our winning bar also happens to be the unhealthiest one!

Have your say

Which KitKat Chunky do you prefer? Or do you think they’re all disgusting? The UK and Ireland-wide competition (which closes on 15th March) favours the Mint and Chocolate Fudge flavours at the moment (both have 30% of the vote), followed by Coconut (21%) and Hazelnut (19%). So the lovefood and lovemoney gang obviously buck the trend… it’s nice to be different!

*UPDATE!* News just in... the official winner of the UK-wide KitKat Chunky competition is KitKat Chunky Mint!
