Winners of the 2014 National Curry Awards announced
Top restaurants and takeaways revealed at a ceremony in London.
This year marks a decade of the National Curry Awards – dubbed the ‘Curry Oscars’ by Prime Minister David Cameron. The awards celebrate the excellence of the UK curry industry, which has apparently now outstripped Chinese as the nation’s favourite takeaway food.
There are around 10,000 curry houses in the UK, that in total serve more than 25 million of us every week.
Award winners
All of 2014’s winners were announced at a ceremony in central London. Who curried (sorry) the judges’ favour?
Best in London Central and City – The Cinnamon Club, central London
Best in London Suburbs – Shampan 3, Welling
Best in South East – Maliks, Berkshire
Best in South West – Myristica, Bristol
Best in North East – Aagrah Midpoint, Pudsey, West Yorkshire
Best in North West – Blue Tiffin, Oldham
Best in Midlands – Mem Saab, Nottingham
Best in Wales – Rasoi Indian Kitchen, Swansea
Best in Scotland – Light of Bengal, Aberdeen
Best Casual Dining – Dishoom, Covent Garden
Newcomer of the Year – Five Rivers A La Carte, Walsall
Best Delivery – The Chilli Pickle, Brighton
Lifetime Achievement – Shams Uddin Khan
National Curry Awards
The awards were established by restaurateur Enam Ali, who has raised more than £1.2 million for charities through the awards and other appeals.
All money raised from this year’s event will be donated to The Weir Archer Academy, an organisation that aims to provide “accessible athletics for disabled athletes at all levels”.
