Five great baking apps

Updated on 10 September 2014 | 0 Comments

As the Great British Bake Off approaches the halfway mark, we check out some nifty apps that will help you get busy baking at home.

Fancy baking like a pro but need a bit of a leg up? You can get a whole range of baking apps for your smartphone to help.

The gadget experts at Endsleigh Insurance have picked out five favourites for you to try at home. Now you can refine your Roscón de Reyes and perfect your panettone!

The Photo Cookbook – Baking (£2.49)
The Photo Cookbook

Great for beginners, The Photo Cookbook Baking app for the iPhone (or iPad) comes with plenty of high resolution professional photographs to guide you through the baking process of 60 cakes, pies, pastries, cookies and bread.

A handy feature is the ability to add notes to recipes, so you can leave yourself a reminder of how long a step took last time... or perhaps a quick line to note that a recipe was even better with toasted almonds on top.

BBC Good Food Cake (£1.99)
BBC Good Food Baking App

The BBC Good Food Cake app for the iPhone has over 170 cake ideas that come with full dietary information. Useful for people on diets or those with intolerances to certain foods. The app includes recipes suitable for all levels of skill, including simple ‘stir-it-up’ cakes that won’t take long, are easy to make, and taste cracking.

These recipes were triple-tested by the Good Food cookery team before the app was built, so they should definitely work when you try them!

Martha Stewart – Cookies (£0.69)

Martha Stewart Cookies AppFor the bargain-bin price of 69p, you can pick up the Martha Stewart Makes Cookies app for iPhone (or iPad), a well-designed app that contains 90 cookie recipes from Martha Stewart. It comes packed with how-to videos, timers, shopping lists, pictures and a unit converter.

It just offers cookie recipes, which seems a bit limited, but for the price and the functions on offer, it’s very reasonable.

Baking Recipes (£0.69)

Baking Recipes - Best Cookbook Ever App

Again priced at just 69p, but the Baking Recipes app for iPhone (or iPad) comes bundled with over 1,000 recipes, reflecting seriously good value for money. It even (rather immodestly) declares itself the 'Best Cookbook Ever'.

All the recipes are saved, meaning that you don’t need an internet connection to get busy, and it has a simple design that’s easy to use.

The recipes range from simple banana bread to show-stopping birthday cakes, meaning it’s a good choice for all ability ranges.

Party Cupcake Recipes 1000+ (Free!)
Party Cupcakes App

You should grab this one if you’re even a tiny bit into cupcakes, as it won’t cost you a penny on the iPhone or iPad. Again, this one’s a little limited because of its single-minded scope, but there’s over 1,000 ideas here, themed from Halloween to St Patrick’s Day. And the creators update it with new recipes every two weeks.

Some of the recipes do require a packet cake mix, which we consider cheating, but the app is free. So we’re not complaining too much.

The Great British Bake Off (£2.99)
GBBO App

The Great British Bake Off has its own app for the iPhone too. So if you want to channel your inner Hollywood or Berry, now’s the time to start.

The app gives you access to some of the best recipes from the series, rated by skill level, so you can pick and choose if you’re after something quick or if you fancy a challenge. The app uses ‘touch-free technology’, meaning that you can move between steps of a recipe without touching the screen – handy when your fingers are busy elsewhere!
