The Fiery Starter recipe

This gin-based, chilli-infused cocktail is the perfect aperitif. It's refreshing and fiery, all in one.

This recipe is created by Thomasina Miers in partnership with Baileys, Gordon's and Smirnoff.

Ingredients

For the cocktail
  • 35 ml dry gin (we like Gordon's London Dry)
  • 60 ml bittersweet lemonade (see separate recipe)
  • 2 lemon slices
  • 10 ml sugar syrup
  • 1 red chilli pepper
  • 1.2 fl oz dry gin (we like Gordon's London Dry)
  • 2.1 fl oz bittersweet lemonade (see separate recipe)
  • 2 lemon slices
  • 0.4 fl oz sugar syrup
  • 1 red chilli pepper
  • 0.1 cup dry gin (we like Gordon's London Dry)
  • 0.3 cup bittersweet lemonade (see separate recipe)
  • 2 lemon slices

For the bittersweet lemonade
  • 500 ml fresh lemon juice
  • 220 g white sugar
  • 5 ml lemon bitters (optional)
  • 1 lemon, zest only
  • 17.6 fl oz fresh lemon juice
  • 7.8 oz white sugar
  • 0.2 fl oz lemon bitters (optional)
  • 1 lemon, zest only
  • 2.1 cups fresh lemon juice
  • 7.8 oz white sugar
  • 0 cup lemon bitters (optional)
  • 1 lemon, zest only

Step-by-step

  1. Chop the head of the chilli and keep the head to use as garnish.
  2. Remove all seeds from the chilli and slice it in small strips.
  3. Make the bittersweet lemonade by mixing the ingredients together.
  4. In a separate glass, add the chilli strips and lemon slices, and muddle.
  5. Add the remaining ingredients and top with crushed ice. Churn the drink with a bar spoon ensuring you spread the chilli all over the cocktail and add more crushed ice.
  6. Garnish with the chilli head.
