An MP and the National Trust want us to ditch imported desserts and embrace our own classic puds.
The National Trust is calling for Brits to get patriotic over their puddings.
Their rallying call follows an interview with newly-appointed Environment Secretary Owen Paterson in Farmers Weekly where he urged people to buy British.
The Conservative MP for North Shropshire said: “There is a huge dessert deficit in this country. We have a huge opportunity to replace imported desserts with desserts made here.”
And, putting its money where its mouth is, the National Trust is offering a free seasonal British pudding with each main meal over £5.75 bought at one of its cafes across the UK during October. You can download the voucher here.
It also recently conducted some research that found British classics apple pie (which isn’t an American invention despite the famous saying across the pond) and blackberry crumble were Brits’ favourite puddings.
I’d argue that there has already been something of a pudding revival, with the likes of the Pudding Club in Mickleton getting its contemporary twists on classics onto supermarket shelves.
