Boodles, courgetti and other new food creations hitting supermarkets

There are a whole host of new twists on favourite ingredients available now.

When the nation took purple sprouting broccoli to its heart, this previously unloved produce became a common sight on the grocery aisle.

Now Sainsbury’s has launched a range of pre-made vegetable products to meet the growing demand for unusual veggie alternatives.

These include: courgette spaghetti, otherwise known as ‘courgetti’; butternut squash noodles, or ‘boodles’; and sweet potato fries.

Tesco has already been selling such items as well as carrot spaghetti and cauliflower couscous.

Let's take a look at some and why they're popular.

Now available in supermarkets…

Courgetti is in keeping with the current trend for spiralised vegetables, and is used as a low-carb, veg-rich alternative to pasta.

Boodles (butternut squash noodles) are also spiralised and add colour to stir-fries in place of noodles.

Carrot spaghetti is another pasta replacement that’s ideal for dieters or people on gluten-free diets.

Beloved of gastropubs, sweet potato fries contain more fibre but fewer calories than white spuds and are an excellent source of vitamins A & C.

Sweet potato mash is also available in supermarkets (and of course you can make your own). Sweet potatoes are higher in natural sugars than white potatoes but lower in carbs and calories.

Last year saw cauliflower being turned into ‘rice’, ‘couscous’ and pizza bases. Tesco sells cauliflower couscous, while Waitrose sells a cauli-broccoli couscous mix and cauli rice.

Tesco’s rainbow couscous is a mix of chopped beetroot, babycorn, broccoli, carrot, cauliflower and red onion.
