There's a new type of chocolate, and it's pink
The future of chocolate has just got a lot more colourful.
Swiss confectioner Barry Callebaut claim to have made an entirely new kind of chocolate. It's produced from ruby beans grown in the Ivory Coast, Ecuador and Brazil, which give the finished bars their distinctive colour.
They say the chocolate has been in development for around 13 years since the company first discovered the cocoa bean while experimenting in the lab, but it wasn’t until two years ago that they decided there was a global market for it.
It's said to have a fruity flavour, described as a “tension between berry fruitiness and luscious smoothness” and "not bitter, milky or sweet”. But despite its appearance, all ingredients are entirely natural – even the pink hue, which comes from a powder that is extracted during processing.
Exactly how the chocolate is made, however, and how the cocoa solid content compares to classic milk and dark chocolate, still remains unclear.
We'll just have to wait for our chance to try this “totally new taste experience".
