Jim & Jennie's Greek Village is as charming and convivial as its name suggests. The restaurateur duo moved from Pyrgos in Greece to Omaha in 1974, and they've been treating the city to top-notch Greek food since the 1980s. All the dishes are made in house, including classic appetizers like keftedes (Greek-style meatballs) and calamari, and entrées such as a generous souvlaki platter.
24. New Jersey: Varka Estiatorio, Ramsey
Varka describes itself as a 'Mediterranean fish house,' with a menu packed with seafood and Greek specialties. The lobster gyro, finished with cucumber-tomato relish and mint tzatziki, is something special, and the Varka chips, made with eggplant and zucchini, are pretty tempting, too. You'll dine in a cozy, understated setting with exposed wood beams and heavy blue drapes.
23. Maryland: Estiatorio Plaka, Baltimore
With its whitewashed walls, wooden ceilings and light and airy interiors, the charming Estiatorio Plaka certainly has the feeling of a Greek taverna. Open for breakfast, lunch, and dinner, a meal here certainly doesn’t disappoint, with a menu made up of classic Greek dishes with a slight modern slant, as well as an array of bakery items. Something of a Richmond gem, The Grapevine is an award-winning restaurant that is now run by the second generation of the Trak family. The menu offers plenty of choice, but if you start your meal with the signature Grapevine Combo Platter (spanakopita, tiropita, dolmades, feta cheese, and Kalamata olives) and follow it up with the house-made moussaka you certainly won’t be disappointed. Just don’t forget to leave room for one of Mother Mary’s desserts – the galaktoboureko (baked phyllo dough stuffed with light cream and custard and drizzled with honey and cinnamon) is said to be unmissable.
20. Wisconsin: Parthenon Gyros, Madison
Parthenon claims it was the first to bring the gyros to the state of Wisconsin, and it prides itself on its made-from-scratch dishes. Unsurprisingly, these classic Greek sandwiches are the most popular dish; the meat is carved and spiced with hand-ground peppercorns, and the tzatziki is produced in house. You can also get cheese fries – this is Wisconsin, after all.

The name, which comes from the Greek word for grandma, reflects the fresh, full-of-heart home cooking that's on offer here. Simple but delicious, the Greek salad features giant Kalamata olives, feta, and vegetables, while the spinach pie gets rave reviews. Flower garlands, lace curtains, and Greek landscape canvases decorate the charming dining room.
12. Florida: Mandolin Aegean Bistro, Miami
The popping blue and white tones of this Miami bistro will have you dreaming of the Santorini skyline – which is deliberate, of course, since Mandolin specializes in Aegean cuisine.
