Better known as Colonel Sanders, the man behind KFC – the world’s favourite fried chicken chain – didn’t find success until he began to franchise his burgeoning chicken business at the age of 66. Nine years later in 1964, he hit the jackpot when he sold the business for $2 million ($20m/£15m in 2025 money).

He was estimated to be worth $3.5 million at the time of his death in 1980, the equivalent of $13 million (£10m) today.
