No other apple pie is quite like the one served up at Gregg's Restaurant. It's made fresh every day with 5lb (2.3kg) of apples brought in from Upstate New York. The fruit is hand-peeled, sliced, and piled high with a special spice blend. The crust is also incredibly buttery, so it's no surprise it has consistently been voted the best in Rhode Island. There are four Gregg's locations in the state.

The strawberry ice box pie has been a firm favorite on Strawn's Eat Shop's menu since 1944. The family-owned diner has three locations: two in Shreveport and one in Bossier City. Other flavors of note include seasonal peach, chocolate, and banana. 

The long list of delectable pie flavors available at The Pie Sisters keeps customers coming back for more. There's a new special each week, with flavors including Key lime pie, fresh strawberry, peanut butter cup, butterscotch, blackberry rhubarb, and chocolate espresso. Call them to place your order or find them at local farmers' markets.

Native to Montana's high-altitude mountains, huckleberries make for the perfect pie filling and no matter the season, you'll always find huckleberry pie in this state. No trip to Glacier National Park would be complete without a stop at the Glacier Highland to enjoy a slice of the famous version served here.

As you might expect from somewhere named the Purple Pie Place, the pies here are indeed purple – think blueberry and blackberry. However, the place's top flavor is the surprisingly irresistible raspberry rhubarb jalapeño, which brings a pleasant heat to a familiar classic. The tastiest stop on a South Dakota road trip, the Purple Pie Place's pies are available whole or by the slice, and are served with whipped cream or ice cream.

What pie weighs 24lbs (10.8kg), feeds 80 people, and is the ultimate holiday treat? Meet the Pumpecapple Piecake – a three-layer invention that combines a pumpkin pie baked in a pumpkin spice cake, a pecan pie baked in a chocolate cake, and an apple pie baked into a spice cake. As so many great things do, it started as a joke at the Three Brothers Bakery in Houston but has since become the bakery's most popular item.

Created in 1993 by The Blue Owl Bakery, the levee pie was made to resemble the levee mountains of gravel and sand that the town of Kimmswick used to save itself from a devastating flood. The pie is made with 18 hand-sliced apples stacked methodically and layered with cinnamon sugar. After baking, it's covered with buttery caramel and chopped pecan pieces, made to represent the sand and gravel of the levees. 

The banana cream pie from Emeril's New Orleans Fish House in Las Vegas is a towering treat sold by the slice. Emeril Lagasse's signature dessert features layers of banana chunks and a thick cream filling and is served with a generous garnish of chocolate shavings and caramel sauce. It's piled up so high, it almost topples over on the plate.

Several of North Dakota’s signature dishes come from early German settlers, but probably their best kept secret is juneberry pie. Juneberries – also called Saskatoon berries –, grow in Canada and the Upper Midwest and are smaller, denser, and bluer than blueberries, with a slightly nutty flavor. To try an epic slice of juneberry pie, stop by Lund's Landing Resort's restaurant, which overlooks Lake Sakakawea, and don't forget to ask for a scoop of vanilla ice cream to accompany it. 

Found in Delaware's longest-running bakery, Bing's in Newark, this banana cream pie features a mass of French cream and bananas and is topped with mounds of freshly whipped cream. A firm customer favorite, the banana cream pie has been a permanent feature on the bakery's menu since it opened in 1946. The chocolate and coconut cream pies are also worth trying. 

The Pie Hole in Roswell sells a large selection of sweet and savory pies, but nothing beats its strawberry crumble flavor. Made with its signature double butter pastry, the pie is filled with a sweet and sour cream custard and a generous amount of strawberries, then topped with a butter sugar crumble. 

Achatz Handmade Pie Co. was founded by Wendy and Dave Achatz in 1993, and the Michigan 4-berry pie has long been the most popular option on the menu. Created by accident, the pie was born when Wendy had been baking pies all day and had various berries left over, but not enough to make one more of each flavor. So, she mixed the locally grown cherries, blueberries, raspberries, and blackberries together, and the rest is history. 

There's nothing quite like a classic apple pie and Deluxe in Iowa City knows how to make a special one. Its version of the oh-so-familiar pie (seen on the right in the picture) uses fresh apples sourced from local orchards and encases them in an exceptional double butter crust. If apple pie isn't your thing, try the strawberry rhubarb, which combines sweet, tart flavors to delicious effect.

A favorite foodie destination among locals, The Black Forest Cafe and Bakery in Amherst is consistently rated the best place for pies in New Hampshire. The menu changes seasonally, but you can always expect to see big hitters like strawberry, blueberry, apple, and chocolate cream among the bakes on offer.

The Four & Twenty Blackbirds signature Salty Honey pie combines custard with a sea salt finish and is the perfect mix of sweet and salty flavors. Run by two sisters who started their baking careers selling pies from their Brooklyn apartment, the joint opened in 2010 and remains a top place to go for a slice of delicious pie.

The pie offering at A Pie Stop in Anchorage changes according to season and availability, but you can always count on the made-from-scratch pies to be excellent. The signature cherry pie is the perfect combination of sweet and sour flavors and is a firm customer favorite, but they're also known for their apple, blueberry, and banana cream pies.

This pie-only bakery is a top stop for brilliant fruit pies filled with blueberries, cherries, and peaches. The one pie you must get from Piefection, though, is the country apple. Made with cinnamon and freshly ground nutmeg, it's a real standout. It's also available gluten-free, if you order 24 hours in advance.

Also known as Hoosier pie, this Indiana specialty has a buttery crust filled with rich vanilla custard. You'll find some of the best at Wick's Pies in Winchester – the nation's largest sugar cream pie producer. The almost century-old recipe is an enduring favorite with locals and tourists alike. 

Opened by Heather Gross in 2004, Pie Hut's delicious pies are much sought-after in Sandpoint and beyond. Known for the adventurous flavors, incredible lattice work, and seasonal specialties, they are things of beauty. Don't leave here without trying the classic raspberry, strawberry, and cherry pies, or order a crème brûlée pie (if you can get your hands on one). The latter is Pie Hut's most talked about treat: a baked custard–style pie with a Graham cracker crust and a crispy sugar shell that's toasted to order.

There's a tantalizing list of pie flavors available at Litton's Market and Restaurant, but the coconut cream pie is a special treat. Pictured top left, it's made with a rich and dense filling that's reminiscent of fudge – perfect for those with a serious sweet tooth. Chocolate lovers, meanwhile, shouldn't miss out on sampling the chocolate chess pie.

As the official pie of Florida, Key lime pie had to feature here. Celebrating the state's famous citrus and named after the Florida Keys, the Key lime pie at Joe's Stone Crab in Miami Beach is an absolute must-order. Although predominately focused on seafood, the restaurant serves one of the best Key lime pies in the state, made with fresh, hand-squeezed Key lime juice and topped with whipped cream just before serving. 

There are all sorts of tasty treats on the menu at Portland's Two Fat Cats Bakery (cupcakes, cakes, cookies, and muffins included), but it's the wild Maine blueberry pie you'll want to try here. Bursting with juicy berries, the pie has a perfectly flaky crust that melts in your mouth. All desserts are baked from scratch, and the pies are all hand-rolled, ensuring each one is made with exceptional care. 

Once you've tried this pecan pie, there's no going back. Amazingly balanced in terms of flavor, the pecans are buttery, while the filling isn't overly sugary or syrupy. Local baker Laurel, who started Carolina Cider Company by selling pies, jams, jellies, and relishes, has now expanded to three roadside shops.

Nestled on US-31 in tiny Beulah, The Cherry Hut has been serving up its signature cherry pie since 1922 – and the experience keeps generations of visitors coming back. Each summer the restaurant reopens (usually around late May) and fills with the smell of buttery crust and tart-sweet cherries as hundreds of pies go out daily. The classic slice – bright, juicy cherries in a flaky crust – can be served a la mode with a scoop of ice cream, or enjoyed plain for pure fruit pie joy. It’s a simple, timeless dessert that tastes of Michigan’s orchards and summers by the lake, best savored while the shop is open for its limited season.

Made with buttery crusts and freshly harvested fruits, the fried hand pies at Peach Park in Clanton are just as comforting as your grandma's. The warm peach pies served with homemade peach ice cream are the absolute favorite – the strawberry ones come a close second. Featuring a farmer’s market, freshly churned ice cream, and a cafeteria-style restaurant (as well as those all-important pies), Peach Park is well worth a road trip.

Predominately a breakfast diner, the pies at the Cornerstone Bakery & Cafe shouldn't be overlooked. It's the cream pies that take center stage here, especially the coconut cream pie, which sees a deliciously light coconut filling piled high in a perfectly buttery crust and finished with generous amounts of whipped cream and coconut shavings. 

Although the pies made by Mom's Apple Pie Company are delicious all year round, the berry pies served in the summer are extraordinary. They see the freshest fruit, harvested from the family farm, piled high on top of a cream cheese and fruit glaze filling, with a thin buttery crust serving as the base. The pie is then covered in the berry glaze once more before being baked.

Shoofly pie might not sound like the most appetizing dessert, but you'll be licking your fingers once you've tried it. A wet-bottom pie originating from Pennsylvania's Amish Country, this bake features a molasses crumb cake with a sticky, gooey, custard-like filling, encased in flaky pastry. 

Classic, crowd-pleasing pies done well are what you should expect at A la Mode Pies in Seattle. Much-loved flavor combinations like Key lime, peanut butter, and white chocolate banana are all available, but the French apple pie is simply irresistible. It features tart, locally grown Granny Smith apples tossed in cinnamon and sugar and layered inside a flaky crust that's topped with a buttery crumble.

This exceptional banana cream pie can be found in the James Beard Award–winning Tartine Bakery in San Francisco. The ever-changing menu always features two of its top-selling pies – coconut cream and banana cream. With its perfectly flaky crust, oozing pastry cream, and chocolate-lined pastry case, the banana cream pie is unlike anything you've tried before. 

The only specialty pie shop on Kauai, this bakery is in Kalaheo, on the south of the island. Although they have an impressive selection of delectable savory pies, one of The Right Slice's bestsellers is the blueberry piña colada pie. You can also get adorable mini pies to enjoy on the road. 

For the best pies in Illinois, head straight for Chicago's Bang Bang Pie & Biscuits. Here, an exceptional Key lime pie is on the menu, sold whole, half, or by the slice, with Key lime custard, lime zest, and a Graham cracker crust. Other menu highlights include the passion fruit cheesecake and salted vanilla custard flavors. The pies can be made gluten-free and vegan to order.

Petsi Pies is a small bakery and coffee bar in Somerville, Boston, serving delicious handmade pies and pastries. Freshly baked daily, everything from biscuits and brioche to pies and cookies looks (and tastes) incredible, but the chocolate bourbon pecan pie deserves a special mention and is always highly recommended by diners. 

Although there are more than 40 different flavors on offer at Betty's Pies in Two Harbors, it's the five-layer pies you'll want to sample. From the signature chocolate to indulgent butterscotch, each has (you guessed it) five layers. The chocolate pie combines a flaky crust with dark chocolate, cinnamon meringue, whipped cream, and chocolate whipped cream for a truly sensational slice.

Delicious Orchards' bestselling apple pie (pictured center) is made from fresh apples harvested at the bakery's orchard. Specializing in all things apple, like apple cider vinegar and apple cider donuts, this gourmet country food market in Colts Neck has grown from a roadside stand started by Carroll Barclay in 1959. The pies are still made using his wife Janet's recipe, and each is hand filled.

If you’re a fan of Ohio's buckeye candies, you'll love this pie, which is essentially a bigger version of the much-loved treat. Rich chocolate and peanut butter mousse combine to create a cream pie that's the ultimate indulgence for anyone with a sweet tooth. You'll find a sensational buckeye pie at Mama Jo Homestyle Pies in Amherst.

If you want to try more than one flavor of pie, or simply can't manage a whole one, head to the Pie Spot and check out its signature individual cupcake pies. They're available in various seasonal flavors, like brown butter peach, blueberry ginger, and cherry, and if you do want one big enough to share, you can order a whole pie, though they're not available in all flavors. 

Poorhouse Pies sells incredible pies in the remote Vermont town of Underhill. In fact, the pies are so delicious, people travel from all over to sample them. While the cream pies certainly have their fans, it’s the lemon blueberry pie with edible pansies that customers are most passionate about. And we can see why; this pie captures the flavor of summer in a buttery crumb.

Opened in 2006, Granny's Pie Factory in East Hartford prides itself on crafting each pie with care. Run by the Harovas family, Granny's Pie Factory has several exceptional pies on offer, but its chocolate crème is one of the best. With a rich chocolate filling and cloud-like cream top, this is the ultimate treat. The pies can also be found at various farmers' markets around Connecticut.

Set along the charming main street of Midway, this cozy bakery is loved for its Southern-style sweets, but the Peanut Butter Mousse Pie is the one locals talk about the most. Light yet decadent, it layers a silky peanut butter mousse into a crumbly chocolate cookie crust, then tops it with a generous swirl of whipped cream. The balance of sweet, salty and creamy makes it surprisingly moreish rather than heavy. With its warm, welcoming atmosphere and focus on small-batch baking and local ingredients, The Midway Bakery and Café delivers a pie that feels both nostalgic and a little bit luxurious.

Honeypie's list of available pie flavors changes regularly but all are delicious. The whiskey walnut pecan is a twist on the Southern classic, with pecans, walnuts, and whiskey, garnished with real whipped cream. Other tempting choices include salted honey, blueberry lemonade, and mint chocolate cream.

The Cowboy Cafe offers extensive breakfast, lunch, and dinner options, but it's the homemade pies that customers rave about, so make sure you save room for a slab (and a dollop of accompanying ice cream). Expect classic flavors such as peach, pecan, sweet chocolate, and berry, with all pies deep filled and encased in buttery pastry.

A regular vendor at Charles Town and Berkley Springs farmers' markets, Susie's Pies sells a winning selection of sweet treats but it's the fruit pies that customers rave about the most. They especially love the strawberry rhubarb flavor, while other top choices include pear ginger, apple, and cherry.

Sweet Magnolia's Bake Shop has two locations in Omaha and is known for its amazing array of sweet treats, but especially its mini pies, which come in flavors including triple chocolate cream and Key lime. Its most popular offering is the red berry pie, a delicious mix of strawberries and raspberries encased in buttery pastry.

For amazing fruit pies, look no further than The Upper Crust in Overland Park. Whatever combination you pick – choose from flavors like raspberry rhubarb, blackberry apple, or peach blueberry – you can expect buttery pastry and a filling that balances the sweet, sour flavors of the fruit perfectly. The menu changes daily, but you can always count on some of the fruit pies being on offer, as they're among the most popular here.

Although you'll find all sorts of fun creations on the menu at Baltimore's Dangerously Delicious Pies, it's the signature Baltimore Bomb that really stands out. Loaded with Berger cookies that are melted and swirled through the sweet vanilla custard chess pie filling, it's the most famous pie here. Sold by the slice or as a whole pie, we guarantee you’ll love this one.

Rich and decadent, this popular pie oozes flavor. Made with a Graham cracker crust, a fudgy chocolate filling, and topped with pecans and salted bourbon caramel, this is a great treat for special occasions. Available from Pie Junkie in Oklahoma City, you can purchase it ahead of time and freeze it or buy a slice and enjoy straight away. 

Raleigh might be better known for its top-notch steakhouses, but you'll want to save space for the chocolate chess pie at The Angus Barn. The incredibly silky-smooth filling, made with semi-sweet chocolate, is encased in a delicious buttery crust. The restaurant is also more than happy to share the recipe with anyone looking to recreate it at home.

Inspired by a recipe (and an antique pie pan) passed down through generations of founder Mary Russell's family, the chocolate meringue pies at Sugaree's Bakery in New Albany are really something special. Each epic pie combines 1lb (450g) of flaky butter and lard pie crust with 3lb (1.4kg) of rich and creamy chocolate filling and 1lb (450g) of meringue on top. This pie is so special it's only available on Fridays and Saturdays, although it can be shipped nationwide.

Ms Lena's Pie Shop is known throughout Arkansas for baking the best pies in the state. Located in De Valls Bluff, regulars know to check the pie shop flavors on its Facebook page every week. The famed coconut cream pie is available by order only, so you'll have to plan ahead to make sure you get your hands on this piece of perfection.

Gold Star Pies is a food truck in Colorado Springs that's been a favorite amongst locals since it started serving pies since 2017. The bourbon pecan pie is the bestseller, combining toasted pecans and walnuts, bourbon, and perfectly flaky pastry. The pie often tends to sell out, so make sure you pre-order a slice or a whole pie for pick up from the truck.
