This year's best restaurants in the world have been revealed. Which UK establishments made the cut?

London has firmly cemented its status as a serious foodie destination after a trio of restaurants in the capital were named among the most elite at The World’s 50 Best Restaurants awards, recently held in New York.

Notting Hill’s The Ledbury was the leader of the pack, jumping six places since last year to 14th on the list. The two Michelin-star eatery serves contemporary British cuisine, with the white beetroot baked in clay with caviar, salt and smoked eel named as its stand out dish.

Meanwhile in 26th place is The Clove Club in Shoreditch – the highest new entry to the top 50. The eatery, which only opened its doors in 2013, originally started out as a supper club in an east London flat and now requires patrons to pre-purchase tickets to secure their place at the hot spot. Diners choose either a five- or seven-course tasting menu.

The only other London restaurant to make the top 50 was Heston Bluementhal’s Dinner in Knightsbridge which dropped from 7th place to number 45 on the list.

After sitting in the number 2 spot for the last two years, Italian eatery Osteria Francescana was crowned the world’s number one restaurant, as decided by a panel of almost 1,000 gastronomic experts.

Located in Modena, Italy, Osteria Francescana prides itself on traditional Italian cooking and is headed by Michelin-starred chef and occasional MasterChef judge Massimo Bottura, who was awarded his first star after a Michelin inspector, left stranded by a road accident, wandered into his restaurant.

Falling from first place to second position was El Celler de Can Roca in Girona, Spain. Rounding out the top five was New York’s Eleven Madison Park in 3rd place, Peru’s Central was in 4th and Danish restaurant Nomad took out 5th place.
