How do you eat your porridge?

Porridge topped the poll of our readers’ favourite breakfast. But how best to eat it?

Back in January we asked Lovefood readers what their favourite breakfast item is. The runaway winner was porridge, with 31.2% of the vote.

However, while ‘porridge’ on its own is tasty enough, there are so many other things you can mix into it. Here are some ideas from our office and beyond.

‘Normal’ options

If you're a traditionalist, you can eat porridge plain or with a dash of salt.

Raisins cropped up as a fairly common addition, and fruit was popular in general – we’ve got a recipe for fruity porridge on loveFOOD if you’re interested in that. Blueberries, when in season, mixed with almond flakes, honey and raisins, said Managing Editor Simon Ward, is the “best way to start a day,”

But simpler options like some shredded apple, sliced bananas or nuts were also popular, and a sprinkling of cinnamon was another suggestion.

Sweet options

While honey has already been mentioned, and sits perfectly fine on its own in porridge, jam is a fruity alternative, and golden or maple syrup works too. For the more adventurous, add some crumbled biscuit (shortbread works a treat apparently) to your honeyed porridge.

Savoury options

Chia seeds are more of a leftfield suggestion, though perfectly reasonable and rather healthy.

Another person said they’d tried a congee-style meal, which contained dried fish. Congee is a rice porridge popular as a breakfast dish in lots of Asian countries, and can be served with various savoury additions such as meat or fish.

A bizzare one

One colleague shared a much stranger way of eating 'porridge' with me: “When I was a kid I would put butter clumps in a circle with Frosties cereal and a little milk on top.”

Now might be the best time to walk away without saying too much about that one…
